research is ... A. boring or B. game-changing

Question:

Are there opportunities for graduate students (mostly PhDs) who use or
study light (formally optics and photonics) in our research to do what
you write/speak about?

Answer:

Overwhelming opportunity in the public and private sector for careers
researching (and creating) disruptive solar energy technologies.

The opportunities? Private sector: Check out what some of the companies "on the edge" are up to: http://www.greentechmedia.com/green-light/post/150-solar-start-ups-revisited-...

Google, through their RE<C project, is another great resource:

Public sector, either federal
(http://www.energy.gov/energysources/solar.htm) or university
(http://rael.berkeley.edu/)

Just heard about Minga ..

Minga works to end the commercial sexual exploitation of children
through youth education and empowerment.

“Minga,” comes from the Quechua language of Ecuador and means “the
coming together of a community to work for the betterment of all.”
With your help, we can end this cycle of exploitation.

They've got chapters all over the place and are all about engaging
young people in taking action in some way. Additionally, they're
always seeking interns and are currently seeking staff. Translation:

thriving through ... elephants?

Question:

Hey Josh!  Thanks again for coming to speak at the University of Maryland tonight. I really enjoyed it, and much of what you said directly applies to my career interests. Because I am really passionate about endangered species rehabilitation and restoration, I was hoping you could send me a few links or organization names that are more specific to my interests.

I am really into the rehabilitation of endangered adolescent elephants, and hope to work in an elephant orphanage or maybe even own my own someday.

Also, I know you are a vegan and I was just wondering how you can maintain that lifestyle in a healthy way, still getting all of the nutrients you need. Is it really expensive making sure you get all of these nutrients? I am a vegetarian but have trouble with the idea of switching to vegan because I don't know if there are enough options available to me right now... I am pretty much constrained to diner food, at least for the remainder of the year. Anyways, thank you again for your talk. It was very intriguing and I love the quote from Edison. I hope that more people will learn to live with this sort of mind-set.

Answer:

Lots (and lots) of opportunities to connect your passion with a purposeful (and fun) career.

Remember the process: 1. find leaders; 2. email them a crisp note about why you - Jessica - are good for their mission; 3. wait to hear back; 4. don't feel bad if you don't hear back; 5. email more people; 6. rock your passion after you get the job

Check out this book: http://www.amazon.com/Conscious-Cook-Delicious-Meatless-Recipes/dp/0061874337 and this book: http://www.skinnybitch.net/  Both show why eating healthy and compassionate are not mutually exclusive.

pick a need: factory farming

I'm speaking with the University of Maryland tonight between 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM in Armory 0112

Here's why: Seventy billion animals -- about  the number of humans who've lived in all of history -- suffer from cruel and inhumane treatment inside factory farm walls. Check out the facebook page here:  www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=184755422416&index=1

Another example of how a need - arguably our biggest need - fuels opportunities to  thrive in business, policy, finance, fashion, media, biology, etc. Check out below list!  Don't want to work for anyone? Click resources tag on right and start your own venture to solve this urgent need.
