economics and change (career series)

Question:

Hey Josh,

I am a student at UMD in the Economic program. I was told you had some insight, by the Economic Association of Maryland, when it came to pursuing an economic degree or pathways and internships I should be looking into. I am a Junior right now, switched recently from Engineering so my past internships are all in the  Engineering field and I am not accustom to looking for internships in another field do you have any recommendations?

Answer:

Great to hear from you. Lots of opportunities to use
business (and your economics degree) to change things for the better.
I'd start with xigi.net and the Fast Company Social Cap Awards (just
google that phrase). Target 10-15 organizations/companies and email
them a crisp message stating why you are good for them - not the other
way around! The process is a little annoying, but the payoff is
awesome. If you have more questions, please don't hesitate (I really
mean that) to give me a all at 610.999.5430.

sustainability and me (AKA- I don't want to hate my job)

Question: Hi, Josh. What organizations and companies should I
contact that are leading the way on sustainability. I'm looking to stay
in the DC area, too. Thanks!

Answer: Always really good to hear from you. Lots of them. I'm not sure
which one's are specific to DC, but check out all the resources on
Good.is; all the companies/organizations on the Fast Company Social
Capitalist Awards (http://www.fastcompany.com/social/2008/index.html);
all the companies/organizations on xigi.net; and, all the organization
on this list http://socialcapitalindex.net/category/enterprises/environmental-sustainabili...

If you wanna stick to sustainability-themed organizations, look up WRI
and the Environmental Defense Fund - both have offices in DC.

Please get in touch if you need anything. I really wanna make sure
you're set; the world needs ya.

social entrepreneurship and education

I get lots of questions from students about solving big needs.
Questions on how to use education, engineering, art, design, law,
finance - whatever. From now on, look for the answers on this blog.

Question: Hi Josh! Any opportunities combining social
entrepreneurship with education?

Hi, Katie. Lots and lots of options for you. Check out KIPP, Citizen
Schools, College Summit, Jumpstart, Reach out and Read, Room to Read,
Civic Ventures, Green Dot, Harlem's Children Zone, and
Teach For America. Remember, contact the leaders with a crisp email
stating why you are good for them! The process is a little annoying,
but the payoff is life-changing. Always here if you need anything. -
J
